Why directing AI agents is the next step in marketing work

a person in business casual, conducting an orchestra of robots who are doing things like writing a document, sending an email, generating an image.

From what I’m seeing, few marketers have made the shift to directing AI agents instead of doing the work themselves. The more common approach is to use AI to help with individual tasks rather than to direct it across their work.

That leaves an opportunity to build a different skill set early. AI agents can handle more of the hands-on work marketers have traditionally done themselves, shifting where your value comes from. Instead of being the person who does all the work, you become the person who decides what gets done, directs it, and judges the result.

The shift from doing to directing

In most marketing departments, the person who gets noticed is still the one who can do it all. Write the brief. Build the campaign. Pull the report. Do it alone, do it well, and do it fast. That’s still what most people think a great marketer looks like. That’s quietly changing as AI agents take on more of the execution.

I keep coming back to one of my favorite lines: It’s not the tennis racket, it’s the tennis player. Almost everyone just got handed a brand-new racket. The few who learn to direct these AI agents with real skill discover how much bigger their work can become.

One way is to use a single AI agent for a small task. Write this email. Summarize this report. That’s it. Far fewer are running several AI agents together, treating themselves as the conductor of an orchestra rather than the one playing every instrument. That gap right there is the opportunity.

Judgment becomes the critical skill

Picture what this looks like day-to-day. Instead of spending your morning writing a campaign brief line by line, you hand that job to an AI agent and spend that time deciding what the campaign should accomplish.

Instead of pulling a report by hand, you have an AI agent pull it and focus your energy on what the numbers mean and what to do next. You’re deciding what good looks like, and that’s a completely different skill from being the one who produces it.

This takes sharper judgment. An AI agent will happily hand you a mediocre campaign brief with total confidence. It won’t tell you it’s mediocre. We have to catch that ourselves. The marketers who do well here are learning, in real time, just like the rest of us, when to trust the output and when to push back.

The window is open right now for a simple reason. The tools just got good enough to make this possible. Most people are still learning the basics, like how to write a decent prompt. Nobody has written the real playbook yet for directing a full team of AI agents like a strategist would direct a team of people. That makes this a skill you can start developing alongside the technology itself.

Start building your AI agent skills now

You don’t have to figure this out all at once or be perfect at it. You just have to start. Stop measuring your value by how much you can do alone. Start measuring it by the quality of your decisions and the judgment you bring to directing the work.

If you want to start this week, here are three moves I’m working on myself:

  • Pick one task you do every week and hand it to an AI agent. Don’t overthink which one. Just pick something small and start.
  • Pay close attention to the moments when you step in and say, ” This is right, or ” This needs to change. Write those moments down. That’s you building your judgment muscle, and that’s the skill that matters now.
  • Try running two AI agents together on one project instead of one. Notice what it feels like to direct instead of do. That feeling is the new job.

A few years from now, directing AI agents well won’t be a rare skill. It’ll be the normal way marketing gets done, the same way using a spreadsheet became normal instead of special. The marketers who start practicing now are helping shape what this new way of working looks like for everyone who comes after them.
