If OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stood alone in the middle of a desert, pointed at the ground and said, “AI,” people would start fighting for a chance to buy sand.
His magic touch isn’t limited to OpenAI. He is a backer of Oklo, a nuclear energy startup with no revenue and a market cap of $26 billion. That valuation is based entirely on the HOPE that tech companies will one day pay for power from its yet-to-be-built plants.
Companies with a similar market capitalization include HP, The Trade Desk, First Solar and T. Rowe Price.
As of late yesterday, its stock was trading at $173.70. Exactly one year ago, it was trading at $12.30.
The Wall Street Journal says Oklo is “the biggest U.S.-incorporated public company that generated no revenue in the past 12 months, according to data from S&P Global Market Intelligence.” The second-largest is a company called Fermi, another pioneer in the field of selling theoretical energy.
According to WSJ, it “was valued at roughly $19 billion upon its public debut earlier this month. Only two other no-revenue companies had larger market caps than Fermi on their first day of trading after an IPO, adjusted for inflation, according to Jay Ritter, finance professor at the University of Florida. These are EV-maker Rivian, which went public in 2021, and Corvis, an optical network equipment maker that went public during the dot-com bubble.”
From this, we can deduce that Mr. Altman’s name is valued at $7 billion.
Headline of the Week: OpenAI has five years to turn $13 billion into $1 trillion.
Now, a roundup of the week’s AI-powered martech releases and related news.
